Dynamical mean-field theory and weakly non-linear analysis for the phase separation of active Brownian particles.

چکیده
Recently, we have derived an effective Cahn-Hilliard equation for the phase separation dynamics of active Brownian particles by performing a weakly non-linear analysis of the effective hydrodynamic equations for density and polarization [Speck et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 218304 (2014)]. Here, we develop and explore this strategy in more detail and show explicitly how to get to such a large-scale, mean-field description starting from the microscopic dynamics. The effective free energy emerging from this approach has the form of a conventional Ginzburg-Landau function. On the coarsest scale, our results thus agree with the mapping of active phase separation onto that of passive fluids with attractive interactions through a global effective free energy (motility-induced phase transition). Particular attention is paid to the square-gradient term necessary for the phase separation kinetics. We finally discuss results from numerical simulations corroborating the analytical results.

Title: Anomalous Diffusion in a Weakly Chaotic Dynamical System
Background: Anomalous transport became a very important topic over the past couple of years [1]. This new, highly interdisciplinary field of research deals with deviations from simple Brownian motion in terms of non-Gaussian processes and non-Markovian dynamics. These dynamics lead to phenomena like subor superdiffusion, i.e., where particles spread out slower or faster, respectively, than comp...
متن کاملMicroscopic theory for the phase separation of self-propelled repulsive disks
Motivated by recent experiments on colloidal suspensions, we study analytically and numerically a microscopic model for self-propelled particles lacking alignment interactions. In this model, even for purely repulsive interactions, a dynamical instability leading to phase separation has been reported. Starting from the many-body Smoluchowski equation, we develop a mean-field description based o...
متن کاملDynamical density functional theory: binary phase-separating colloidal fluid in a cavity
Abstract. The dynamical density functional theory of Marconi and Tarazona [J. Chem. Phys., 110, 8032 (1999)], a theory for the non-equilibrium dynamics of the onebody density profile of a colloidal fluid, is applied to a binary fluid mixture of repulsive Gaussian particles confined in a spherical cavity of variable size. For this model fluid there exists an extremely simple Helmholtz free energ...
متن کاملPhase separation in the particle-hole asymmetric Hubbard model
The paramagnetic phase diagram of the Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor NNN hopping on the Bethe lattice is computed at half-filling and in the weakly doped regime using the self-energy functional approach for dynamical mean-field theory. NNN hopping breaks the particle-hole symmetry and leads to a strong asymmetry of the electron-doped and hole-doped regimes. Phase ...
متن کاملContinuum theory of phase separation kinetics for active Brownian particles.
Active Brownian particles (ABPs), when subject to purely repulsive interactions, are known to undergo activity-induced phase separation broadly resembling an equilibrium (attraction-induced) gas-liquid coexistence. Here we present an accurate continuum theory for the dynamics of phase-separating ABPs, derived by direct coarse graining, capturing leading-order density gradient terms alongside an...
